Stupid boots
10.28.04
I do not understand why my knee-high boots are so damn tight. Whenever I go shopping for a new pair, it takes forever to find a pair that zips up my calves. Everyone who knows me knows that I'm pretty tiny, and although I know I have muscular calves from 10 years of dance classes, I can't imagine that most people have smaller calves than I do! It must come from living in this society where curves are looked down upon. We all must look like Paris Hilton and her boy's stick-figure body. I LIKE my curves, thank you, and when my curves fit into size 4 pants, I should NOT have a difficult time finding boots that fit around my calves.
I would also like to protest clothing stores that don't have a size that fits me. When the bright green pants that are marked down to $19.99 at Express are too tight in a size 2 and so-huge-they're-falling-off-me in a size 4, it makes me want to take said bright green pants and strangle someone. The Gap also has a bad habit of making XS shirts that are too small and S shirts that are too big. WHO is the standard they're using?
Paris Hilton, probably.

I miss Sigma Kappa
10.22.04
I have a new grandlil, and I'm not there to meet her! Sometimes I don't like being an alumni.
Sellers on eBay who describe their item as something other than it is and then say, "Well, you received it, so be happy" suck.
My mommy fractured her ankle! And it's all because of a stupid neighbor of ours who let her dog out in the front yard without a leash or electric fence collar, and then that dog attacked our dog that my mom was walking and caused my mom to fall. This is the SECOND time that dog has run out to attack our dog, and my parents had each called her the first time it happened to ask her to PLEASE keep that dog on a leash!
Even more infuriatingly, when my mom stood up and realized her ankle didn't feel right, she told the neighbor, "I think I broke my ankle" and the neighbor just grabbed her dog, said she needed to inspect it for bites, and went inside. My mom had to hobble down the street back home by herself! Nevermind HER dog was the one who attacked our dog and was the only one growling and being mean. I'm trying to convince my parents to sue, but my dad has this idea that it needs to be handled in a "neighborly" way. If you ask me, that bitch wasn't acting neighborly by leaving her dog out to attack any dog that walked by and by not helping my mom!

Really, shut up already
10.21.04
The girl who lives in my apartment building and is also in my section at school is driving me nuts. Yesterday, on the way home, she did nothing but babble on and on about how she has no life except for reading for school, and how the memo that's due Monday (one of the big assignments in legal writing) is taking up all her time and how she's so stressed about it.
Here's the thing - she's a part time student, which means she doesn't have Contracts, which is the class that contributes a huge chunk of the reading assignments for the week. She also doesn't work, as part time students most often do, which means that after an hour or two of classes in the morning, she goes home to face a long day filled with no other responsibilities (except for her admitted addiction to the television). Meanwhile, all the rest of her full-time classmates are faced with a 2-to-3 hour break and then another hour or or two of classes in the afternoon.
What gives here? The guy who lives in our building and is also in our section doesn't think she realizes how bad it makes her look; apparently she complains to him a lot about her workload as well. As I mentioned in my last post, we don't have that much reading to do each week, and she has one class less to read for. Furthermore, even with my full-time workload and the 2 to 3 hours I've devoted each day to working on that damn memo, I have plenty of free time.
I've considered saying something snippy to her, but the last time I did that, the person I snipped at stopped talking to me (not that I cared, I was sick of having conversations that were exclusively about "OMG the engagement ring he bought is too small, OMG OMG, I hope the band isn't too wide since it'll dwarf the tiny stone, OMG OMG, why couldn't he have gotten .5 carats instead of .4, OMG OMG, he got a round stone, ewwwww, doesn't he CARE about me?" As far as I'm concerned, someone whose priorities are that screwed up is not worthy of my friendship.)

Mmmm, doughnuts
10.19.04
My legal writing professor brought doughnuts today because we weren't supposed to have class, and then she changed her mind at the last minute. Who said law school couldn't be fun?
Speaking of law school, I have to laugh because Amy told me I'm the only person she's ever heard say that law school wasn't as difficult as they expected. It's not, really. I think it might be because I'm not as competitive as a lot of people are here. One girl in my section was dramatically moaning to anyone who would listen, "Oh my god, last night I was in the library reading until 9:30 at night, and then I woke up at 5:30 this morning to read some more." I wanted to smack her.
We don't really have that much reading to do each night. We only read what we can go over in class the next day. I get about 75% of it done during my 2 to 3 hour lunch break, which frees up time at home to spend on my legal writing assignments (Memo II is due on Monday, blech) and on more fun things that one might do in their free time. This girl is either A) a really slow reader, B) reading ahead, or C) trying to sound impressive but failing horribly.
Furthermore, if there are concepts I don't understand while I'm reading (most of the reading is court cases surrounded by notes and a few paragraphs of explanation), I can count on my professors to clear things up in class the next day (barring the Torts prof; he does the opposite by screwing up something that I thought I understood perfectly well, which, according to the TA, ends up being the correct way of understanding it anyways).
A lot of people are annoying me by buying commercial outlines (which any law school prof will tell you is a waste of money) and books that were written to go along with the textbooks that summarize the court case and analysis. I know lots of people who are only reading the one-page summary and analysis just in case the prof calls on them in class. To me, that's counterproductive. It seems much more important to me that I become familiar with reading court cases and figuring out the analysis by myself. A lot of professors use textbooks that they put together themselves, and then you don't have the benefit of a commercial summary. A lot of people view reading the assignments as a means to an end (being prepared in class just in case you're called on), but I think there's more to it than that.
Maybe my laid back attitude will get me somewhere, or maybe all those ultra-competitive people will leave me in the dust. I won't know until December or so. School will get more difficult once it comes time to study for and take the exam (the only grade in my classes except for legal writing), but I think I'll be fine.

One year
10.18.04
Today marks one year since Will and I went on our first date. NEVER would have thought all the way back then that I would end up moving to Chicago because of him, although I knew right away he was a great guy. I think I picked a winner. ; )
And thankfully, this weekend, he decided to freeze the leftovers from the 3.58 pound roast and 5 pounds of mashed potatos he made instead of insisting that I eat them all this week before they went bad. With everything he had left before (such as mashed potatos and cheesecake), I knew I'd gain 20 pounds if he made a habit of it. We're not sure if mashed potatos freeze well, but we'll find out this coming weekend.

Eek
10.08.04
I really want to see the movie The Grudge. However, after seeing this picture, I'm seriously wondering how much it's going to cut into my sleep...it's pretty frickin' freaky.
Warning -- I have no idea if the picture spoils the plot or what part this picture actually plays in the movie. If you're picky about those kinds of things, proceed with caution.

Saxophones?
10.07.04
So tell me, what's up with panhandlers and saxophones? In the last month or so, I've encountered three panhandlers playing saxophones on the street corners. One is a regular who I see at least twice a week in the same spot outside Union Station, but the other two I've only seen once. I don't get it...if you have to beg for money on the streets, how the hell do you acquire a saxophone? Is there some charitable society giving away free saxophones to unemployed people? One guy didn't even have shoes, how the heck did he get a saxophone? My knowledge of instruments is limited to the piano, but I'm pretty sure brass instruments aren't cheap.
In other interesting news, Will tells me his mother gave him an idea for my one year anniversary present, but he's not sure if he can lift it. I'm dying of curiousity now.
