Song of the Day: Tricky - Girls
Sometimes the most random things bring back repressed memories that are so ridiculous they're better left repressed.
Most of my exes don't really compete for the "most intelligent man alive" award, but one of them really, really took his stupidity to the extreme. One day I hear him yelling from my bathroom, "Brooke! This is GROSS!" I go in to see what has him in an uproar, and he's pointing at a half-used q-tip laying on my sink. I go through q-tips like water when putting on makeup, because they're perfect for sweeping up loose eyeshadow or fixing crooked eyeliner. If I only use one half, I'll generally leave it out so I can use the other side the next day. The q-tip in question had a very bright blueish/purplish color staining one end.
After I asked what was so gross, he gives me a rant about how it's horrible that I left my earwax-covered q-tips laying out for other people to see. After I stared at him for a second, and then informed him that it was makeup, he goes, "Oh. Well, how was I supposed to know that?"
I don't know, maybe because it was an unmistakable shade of blue?

Lectures on pepper vodka

Song of the Day: Live - Lightning Crashes
My Remedies prof has been lecturing from Poland this first week of class. Gotta love the internet. He also informed us tonight, after he made several typos in the Instant Messenger window he was using, that he had been drinking pepper vodka. Excellent.
I was highly amused by a thread on the Last.fm forums in which people bashed someone for having a MySpace page that crashed their fancy, high-powered computers. Seriously, 10 years ago, when Geocities was the prime free website host and ICQ was the #1 instant message service of choice, people had already discovered that blinky things on the internet were bad. I truly don't understand the need to pack in all sorts of blinking and flashing and moving and gyrating graphics, along with both a song clip and several noisy videos. What's the deal? "Hi, be my MySpace friend, let me give you a fucking seizure."
Yeah, I think I'll remain friendless, thank you very much.

No Day But Today

Song of the Day: Idina Menzel - Still I Can't Be Still
Tonight was musical night: I watched both Moulin Rouge! and Rent, two movies that spend a lot of time in my DVD player. Seeing them back-to-back, I was struck by how each movie has a line that repeats thoughout it and sums up its theme, and how I've always considered these lines to be some of my favorites.
From Moulin Rouge!, we have, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."
And then, from Rent, there's the lyric that I fell in love with even before I saw the stage version almost ten years ago: "There's only us, there's only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way, no day but today."
I might also mention that Rent never fails to reduce me to wimpering, pathetic tears.

Song of the Day: Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
I've slowly been plodding through Sarah Waters' Affinity after reading rave reviews of it. Although it was written in 1999, it was a gothic novel that could have been written during the days of Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley. Unfortunately, that includes the dreary slowness and general detachment that accompanies most of the gothic lit that I've read. I had to talk myself into opening its pages each time I went to read it, and I was always annoyed when I would read through 50 pages and feel like I hadn't gotten any further into the plot. Tonight, I was rewarded by the last 30 pages, which made me sit up and say, "Holy crap, where did that come from?" It was completely unpredictable, but not in a poorly-written sort of way. I'm sitting here now, after complaining for weeks about how slow it was, thinking, "Damn, that was a really good book."
Now I must stare at the 500 unread books I own and decide what to read next. I need to stop being so easily seduced by used bookstores.

Song of the Day: Portishead - Mysterons
There always comes a time after exams are over where I sit around, rather helplessly, not too sure what to do with myself. Suddenly I have free time, and I don't have to feel guilty about flipping on the PS2 or opening a non-law-related book. It's such a foreign feeling that I spend the first few days doing nothing, waiting for a bit of responsibility to drop into my lap.
My little sister visited me, and my apartment is still showing signs of damage. A classic example of what sort of malarky she can get into: we had Chinese food, and she left an open pack of soy sauce resting on the table. Today, I go to eat the almond cookie that the restaurant put in the take-out bag, only to find that all the soy sauce from the open packet spilled out and was absorbed by the cookie. She'll probably laugh when she reads this, but I find it very terrible that she ruined my cookie after I gave her half my clothes.
So it wasn't QUITE half, but we did spend two hours going through my closet. It all started with me noticing a shirt I didn't like and asking her if she wanted it. Then I realized that I could use her to weed out all the stuff that I don't like that's been cluttering the closet. I AM wondering what sort of trouble she's going to get into with the black pleather mini-skirt I misguidedly bought when I was 16.
Off to explore this strange "free time" thing.

I knew there was a reason I hated tax class.
My tax final is at 6:00 tonight. The (SUPERSIZED) season finales of The Office and Earl are on tonight as well. Who scheduled this exam??
The prof is giving us four hours to take it. I hope the rumors that people have finished in 15 minutes in the past are true, because A) I don't relish the idea of being downtown by myself at 10 at night, and B) I have to know if anything happens between Jim and Pam tonight!
If I miss them, I'll just buy them from iTunes tomorrow, but this also means that I'm imposing a gag order on everyone. No spoiling it for me!

Gay man in a woman's body

Song of the Day: Queen - Somebody to Love
I haven't posted lately mainly because I wanted to get WordPress set up in here; I imported all my Greymatter entries into a Wordpress database, and now I just have to figure out how to move it all into my layout. Right now it's in some default form with a sidebar and everything, which just isn't my thing. I can't be arsed too much right now though, because I'm in the middle of AHHHHH!!! EXAMS! freakout mode.
The other day, I went to my favorite CD shop that specializes in dance music and imports, and they had a sign in the window that said they were looking for a part-time employee for the summer who knows all about dance music. This seems tailor made for me, as I want a (non-law related) part time job for the summer, and my uncle recently told me that he thinks I'm a gay man trapped in a woman's body, so I updated my résumé, typed up a cover letter, and dropped it off today. Cross your fingers for me.
I'm also no longer convinced I'm going to fail my Personal Income Taxation final. This either means A) my studying has paid off, or B) I'm super delusional.
