08/31/2006: "Willpower...what's that?"

Song of the Day: Sweet Coffee - Don't Need You

I recently decided I wasn't going to buy any more books, given the sheer number I own that I haven't read yet. This morning, I left for school far too early, and found myself on Michigan Avenue with an entire hour before class started. I popped into Borders, swearing that I was only going to look and see what new books were out, rather than buy anything. How great was my willpower?

"Ooh, look, Douglas Preston's Tyrannosaur Canyon is finally in paperback."

Yeah, what willpower?

Bookstores put me in a strange mood; I get mesmerized by all the pretty covers and get an itching feeling under my skin that I really need to buy every single book I lay eyes on. This is probably why I've already filled up two bookshelves and have taken to stacking new books on the kitchen table.

I'm currently watching Casablanca for the first time, and I'm totally amused. Ingrid Bergman cheats on her husband while he's in a concentration camp. Ingrid and Humphrey Bogart fall in love with each other even though they don't know a single thing about each other. I think it's totally classic, but not for the reason most people do, I suspect.

I get the same feeling whenever I go into a bookstore. I have so many books around the apartment that I haven't even opened up yet.

The only thing I really have to do to get to them all is to learn how to read.

I never saw no good in none o' that book learnin' nohow.
