04/18/2006: "Bookish rant"

Song of the Day: Saint Etienne - Pale Movie

I've been working my way through the books co-written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child; some of them are techno-thrillers (like Michael Crichton, only better), and others are serial killer thrillers, and they're all some of the most addicting things I've ever read. The very best ones have FBI Agent Aloysius Pendergast in them, and he's one of the most memorable characters I've come across in a long time. I just finished their 10th book today; it's the second book of a trilogy, and the third part doesn't come out until May 30th.

Which is just KILLING me. I need to know how it ends, NOW. I have it preordered on Amazon, so hopefully they'll be swift in sending it to me.

In other bookish news, Jacqueline Carey is writing a new trilogy to follow up her Kushiel trilogy, which was the best thing that I have ever read, possibly ever. I'm apprehensive, however, because the two books she wrote after the Kushiel trilogy were panned by critics and readers as not being anywhere near what she created before. I'm worried that she's trying to recapture the glory by adding sequels where they aren't necessary. My fears are slightly alleviated by the fact that the new trilogy is from the point of view of the original herione's adopted son, and also because it's entirely probable that villainess Melisande Shahrizai would never have just complacently stayed under house arrest for the rest of her life.

Only time will tell; I think the first book in the new trilogy comes out in June.
