01/11/2006: "Brit Awards 2006"
Song of the Day: U2 - In A Little While
Given that a massive portion of the music I listen to comes from Europe, I always take interest in the award shows such as the Brit Awards, which is the British version of the Grammys. I can relate to Europe's music awards shows much more than I can relate to America's; most American music is stuff that I can't even understand why people listen to it, much less nominate it for prestigious awards. The nominees for the 2006 Brit Awards were just announced today, and I'm definitely raising my eyebrows over one of the most prevalent nominees: James Blunt.
I came across James Blunt for the first time when he performed on SNL a few weeks back, and he made me regret turning the show on that night far more than the sorry state of SNL's current skits. He falls under the type of music that I've labeled "mellow stoner music" ever since high school; think Dave Matthews Band or anyone else who warbles along to slow paced, uninspiring guitar chords or piano melodies. James Blunt's current single involves him wailing, "You're beeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuutiful" over and over until I'm ready to punch him in the nose. And no, the way I spelled "beautiful" is not hyperbole.
And somehow this man is taking over the Brit nominations. The worst part is that he's up for Best British Male Solo Artist with Robbie Williams. Everyone who knows me knows that I think Robbie is God, and the idea of this untalented warbler beating him out for the award is enough to make me want to swear off music forever. The other travesty is that he's up for Best British Single along with Sugababes' Push The Button, which is the most absolute perfect piece of pop created since Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head.
I have faith; the two top recipients of Brit awards are Robbie (11, plus 3 when he was in Take That) and U2 (7). This means they have to have good taste.
