12/20/2005: "Transit Strike"

Song of the Day: Utada - Exodus 04

In case anyone's missed the news today, NYC transit workers went on strike today, effectively shutting down all subways and buses.

That completely terrifies me. If that happened here in Chicago, I'd be totally stranded. The only way to get anywhere outside of a one-mile radius would be to hail a cab, and cabs are expensive. It's over $10 to get from here to the Loop (the heart of Downtown Chicago where my school is), and paying over $20 a day just to get to and from school would wipe out my wallet in no time. And even if everyone could afford to take a cab, there aren't enough cabs to move this entire city's commuting population. No matter what, without public transportation, everything would grind to a halt.

Honestly, thinking about the effect such a strike would have makes me angry at the strikers. I want to grab them by the shoulders and shake them and tell them to stop whining because their whining is affecting thousands of people who had nothing to do with their failed negotiations.

In other idiot news today, SOME ASSHOLE STOLE A BABY PENGUIN, and now it's probably going to die. I think I'm going to cry.

I'm off to the post office (to which I will get to by taking the bus) to mail some textbooks I sold online. I'm anticipating massive lines, and I'm (futilely) hoping that the post office will have a "I'm not one of those people who waited until the last minute to send their gifts" express line.

*dies* I know, I had to do a double-take when I read that part.
