12/02/2004: "Uggly trends"
I bought a pair of Ugg-knockoff boots over Thanksgiving break, despite thinking they're pretty ugly. I mean, why do you think the original ones are called Ugg? Besides, they're trendy, and when have trends ever been flattering or cute? Take the poncho craze right now. What's so flattering about wearing an oversized blanket over your head that makes you look like you're 50 pounds heavier? Although my mom has a really nice one that's for at-home-use only, it's so big that you can lay down on the couch with it on and it's like a giant flannel blanket that can't fall off your shoulders.
Steering back on-topic, despite these boots being so Uggly, I've worn them every day for the last week. They're warm and beyond comfortable; I put on a pair of sneakers yesterday and was shocked at how hard they seemed compared to the boots. I can't do the tuck-your-jeans-into-them trend, since it seems to require straight-legged or tapered jeans (another unfortunate trend that's trying to sneak back in...IT'S UGLY, STOP IT), so I'll just languish halfway in this reluctant attempt at wearing something trendy. Trust me though, if I'd gone to law school in LA, I would NOT be wearing these things. Whoever wears them in a climate that isn't snowy and windy and freezing is going over the top in their attempt to be In Style And Trendy.
(Can I complain about that off-the-shoulder trend, too? It's not the 80s anymore, for crying out loud, and it makes you look like your clothes don't fit you. Furthermore, it's thirty degrees out here, cover your friggin' shoulders.)
(And one final trendy pet peeve of mine -- the Louis Vuitton Murakami knock-off bags. Especially if you don't have any clue that the pattern is called Murakami. That makes you very uncool indeed, even uncooler than someone who carries a knock-off bag without the appropriate tongue-in-cheekness that should accompany it -- which is bad enough.)

I'm thisclose to buying Ugg knock-off boots, and I feel the same way. I think they're ugly, but somehow compelling or intriguing or too trendy to resist. I think part of the problem is that I've been to the mall a few times this week, and each time I've seen some uber-trendoid girl with her Uggs, leg warmers, mini skirt, and faux fur jacket...and despite thinking it odd, I want that outfit. I went into A&F looking for it, and felt like a geezer. Sigh.Tara, Friday, December 3rd
hate the Uggs, but the ponchos - the drapey, lacy ones - appeal to me. :Dmelantha, Friday, December 3rd
I have never seen drapey, lacy ones on people in real life. They all look like they're wearing afghans their grandmas knitted them. Now, I like the afghans my grandma has made me, but I don't wear them as a fashion accessory.Brooke, Friday, December 3rd
I think they're ugly too... however, I bought the boots only because they were warm, and I wear them everywhere.Shannon, Friday, December 3rd
Call me uninformed but I like the ugg shoes. They are great. Ponchos HOT, 80s Hot, and Leg warmers the hottest of everything discussed. If a girl has leg warmers it can make a not so fab girl chic, at least in my warped world. Especially if I'm drinking if someones wearing something that stands out like leg warmers or a poncho I remember them and infact in many cases wouldn't mind going home with them for the simple reason of the leg warmers.Matthew, Saturday, December 4th
Ah yes, but Matthew, you're also one of the guys who jumped on the fold-up-your-polo-shirt-collar bandwagon. That definitely means you're not gay though, since it's a strictly metrosexual trend. Strictly PREPPY metrosexual trend, really.Brooke, Tuesday, December 7th
