06/13/2004: "Tabasco"

Man, whenever I spice up V8 juice, I always forget that a little Tabasco goes a long way. Ouch.

Since I've been doing the 9 to 5 gig at a criminal law firm this summer, I've really learned what the whole hating Monday thing is all about. It wouldn't be as bad if I didn't spend an hour on the road every day, and I'm really looking forward to August when I move to Chicago and give up my car for public transportation.

Yes, ta da, I'm moving to Chicago. I've known for a while, and I actually just signed the lease on my apartment and in July I'm taking a few weekends to furnish it and move my stuff. Sometime between when the summer semester, and hence, my internship, ends on August 6 and when law school orientation begins on August 16, I'll physically move my self and call it my home.

I'm absolutely esctatic, my apartment is a studio with a full bath, full kitchen, giant walk-in closet (!!), and a very large living space to divide into a bedroom and a living room. The one-bedrooms I looked at were only about $200 more a month, but were huge and way more room than I could ever fill or use. I'm on the 17th floor of a 40-story high rise right on Lake Shore Drive, which means that I look out my window and see Lake Michigan. I'm in a neighborhood called Lakeview where there are four (!!) Japanese restaurants and three Thai restaurants in walking distance, as well as all the shops, grocery stores, and other things I'll need. A bus goes right from my building to Union station, which is a block away from my school.

My school, by the way, is Chicago-Kent, which is the law school for the Illinois Institute of Technology. They specialize in how law is changing due to technology changing, although they offer plenty of other classes so you can specialize in whatever you want. It's three blocks from the Sears Tower, so I'm smack in the middle of downtown Chicago. It's scary how close I am to the shopping district of Michigan Avenue, both at school and at work.

So that's my life update, and I can't being to explain how agonizing it is knowing that that's all in my very-near future, but I have to get through this damn internship first. I want to be in Chicago NOW. Luckily, Melantha isn't too furious with me for choosing Chicago over LA, and it's fully expected that there will be visits. Of course, there's also our plans for New Years in Vegas, as we'll both finally be 21 (Brooke's birthday countdown: 8 days!).

Will is very excited about my upcoming move, and it's so cute how he brings it up every time we talk. Now all that he needs to do is find out what police department he's working for so that we know what side of Chicago he's going to be living on. The various departments that are hiring have their processes spread out over the whole summer, so it might be a few months until he knows for sure. My parents are also really excited, since they've never been to Chicago and everyone who they talk to now either used to live in Chicago or has a family member or friend who does, and everyone just raves to them about the city.

Off to read before bed.
