05/22/2004: "Stupid defense attorneys"
This quote in an article about Michael Jackson's indictment really had me scratching my head:
"The defense attorneys decried the "media frenzy" that has surrounded the case and said that the grand jury indictment reflects a "one-sided, prosecution theory" of the proceedings."
Are they complaining, or are they stating that they're afraid the normal public doesn't know that? Because that's all a grand jury hearing is, is the prosecution presenting all the evidence to determine if it's enough to go to trial with. Being indicted isn't that big of a deal at all; most people who go before a grand jury are indicted. It's just a checkpoint weeding out cases where there isn't enough evidence to go to trial. That's why the defense doesn't get to present a side, it's not a sign of guilt or innocence if you're indicted.
