02/03/2004: "Greeks drink"

So I'm reading in my drug book about how lots of drinking on college campuses happen inside frat and sorority houses, and I'm thinking about how Shannon told me that at OSU, they have parties inside their actual frat and sorority houses. All I can say is, holy shit.

I live in a sorority house at my college. If anyone ever tried to have a party in there and invite throngs of people I didn't know to drink beer and act stupid and potentially puke all over everything, I'd throw a fit. All the sorority houses here are "dry houses," meaning even if you live there and you're 21, you're not allowed to have alcohol. My sorority house is my home. I've lived there for two and a half years now. The idea of parties being thrown in my home just makes me freak out.

Some might think it sucks that at my school our Greek housing is considered "on campus" and is owned by the university. Sure, that means that we have certain rules, but for the most part, that makes me say "Thank God!" It's bad enough when my own housemates bring home drunk friends on Saturday nights who end up roaming through the halls lost. I couldn't imagine an entire houseful of them.

Just to correct your entry, only fraternity houses have parties in their actual houses here at Ohio State. All sorority houses are supposed to be dry houses as well. Our house is a dry house- others, I cannot tell you if they are or not.

Fraternities have alcohol due to the fact that they have "after hours". If they have an after hours party, it must be registered with the University and the Interfraternity Council. Then, the frats are mandated to check all ID's and mark anyone underage at the party as well as have "sober patrol". This, however, does not stop the underage drinking, and sober patrol is not always that sober.

Yes, but they still have drunk people partying where they live. Which, to me, in an unbearable thought.
