12/23/2002: "Year end music lists"
Am I totally out of touch with what "good" music is? Every "best music of 2002" list I read makes me yawn and shake my head. First off, what's up with Justin Timberlake's solo album being included on every list I've seen? They all praise him for sounding like Michael Jackson. My question is, why is he being congratulated on sounding like another singer? Isn't that something we usually frown on? And since when is it a good thing to be compared to Michael Jackson? The whiter his skin got, the less cool both he and his music became. I swear the bleach affected his music ability.
Another "best CD of 2002" I don't get, and I know many people who know me agree with me, is Avril Lavigne's horrific album. Dude, she bashes Britney for having rhyming lyrics, but there isn't a single line in either Complicated or Sk8er Boi that don't have some sing-song-y rhyme that I can't even repeat with a straight face. And then there's her outfit. Even US Weekly said in their 2002 fashion review that they'd like to see her "shred" the tie. *raises hand* I'll help.
Of course, you can't take music seriously in America. This is the country whose premier music television station decided it was a really really great idea to play only ten different videos each week from now on.
