08/30/2002: "Random Thought #2"

If Americans are sooo obsessed with dieting, why is America one of the fattest (THE fattest?) countries in the world? You'd think that with all the dieting we do, we'd be walking around looking like toothpicks.

I think that dieting is given publicity and a big spin by the media (who set the standard for women's body image), TV, and self-help books, making it seem like we're more obsessed than we are. I also think that most of that dieting interest comes from young girls and women who think they have to be the ideal to get men to notice them. youth and beauty are of interest, so they get the most airtime. therefore we have neurotic female characters on tv, who have the body style of oh, say, toothpicks, complaining about their weight.

in reality, I think some women care, a smaller amount care to the obsessive extent that's portrayed in hollywood/the media, and some just don't.

Hey I don't think it healthy for girls to run around like toothpicks but hey if they can do it in a healthy manner and look good all "hoodched out" then by all means, "you got it go ahead and flaunt it."

But on the topic of why we are so fat.... its cause people spend so much time by the tv watching skinny people and writing on internet message boards and oh I think I am fat I must go do 5000 sit-ups..... Ahhhhh I feel better, now I can eat a pretzel. My theory is that you can loose 10 calories in a kiss, make that kiss my phyical and then do it more often and throw in some fitness clothes and you got yourself a right old fitness plan thats more fun then dieting.
